Keeping an Eye on Your Smartphone

If you quickly inspect your surroundings, you are likely to realize that most people - regardless of age - are using mobile devices. In truth, these devices are wonderful, because they let us be in touch with whoever we want almost always. Nevertheless many people have a habit of holding their phones and tablets very close to their faces. This gives way to a number of demands on your vision that require your eyes to operate in a way that's quite a change from its normal activity.

Because we all hold smart phones so close, our eyes end up working overtime, just to look at text and images. After some time, research shows this may lead to problems with focus and vision, especially for those who already use vision correction, like glasses or lenses. Any eye care professional will tell you that when such individuals spend a lot of time holding a device at a closer than normal distance, the eyes have difficulty correcting for distance. This puts pressure on your eyes, and you wind up with headaches or migraines, which aren't pleasant.

But there are more symptoms that can arise. Holding your smartphone too close can make you blink less, and this can lead to dry eyes and blurry vision.

But we can't all just stop using our phones. So what's the solution? In order to lessen these symptoms resulting from the use of our phones, we recommend keeping your phone at a safe distance from your eyes, and enlarge the text, so you can still read it. Also, try not to use your phone too much! If you've been on it a while, allow your eyes to have a rest. Learning to be smart about your smartphone will protect your eyes.
